A Celebration of German Tradition and Christmas Magic
Standing proudly at the Wollenmann House, 1150 Main Street, Ferdinand, IN 47532, the Ferdinand Weihnachtspyramide (Christmas Pyramid) is a breathtaking display of light, craftsmanship, and heritage. Handcrafted in Germany, this stunning structure serves as a year-end symbol of Ferdinand’s strong German roots and festive spirit.
Christmas pyramids, or Weihnachtspyramide, are beloved German traditions that date back to the 16th century. Originating in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), these wooden towers were early inspirations for the modern Christmas tree, featuring rotating tiers of nativity scenes, angels, and figures that tell the story of Christmas. Ferdinand’s pyramid beautifully continues this Old World tradition right here in southern Indiana. Be sure to watch the video below to see the start of our journey to bring this German tradition to our small town!
Each tier of the Ferdinand Weihnachtspyramide tells a chapter of our town’s history — from the arrival of Father Joseph Kundek and the early German settlers to the enduring faith and community spirit that built Ferdinand. Visitors can listen to an audio narration on-site, available through a QR code, that brings these stories to life with music and narration.
The pyramid shines nightly throughout November and December, filling downtown Ferdinand with warmth and wonder. It also serves as a featured stop on the Ferdinand Christkindlmarkt route, where the sales hut at its base is used by local vendors year-round. During Christkindlmarkt weekend, it comes alive with cheer as Yard Goat Artisan Ales and Best Vineyards Winery serve festive beverages beneath its glowing tiers.
The Ferdinand Weihnachtspyramide was made possible through the generosity of many sponsors, including a major gift from Mary C. Lange in honor of her late husband, Clem Lange, founder of Best Home Furnishings. A handcrafted replica of a Best Chairs armchair on the second tier serves as a lasting tribute to their legacy of giving.
We invite you to experience the beauty, story, and spirit of the Ferdinand Weihnachtspyramide — where the light of Christmas and the heart of our German heritage shine brightly for all to see.
Be sure to make a stop at Ferdinand's newest Christmas attraction and experience the magic!
